From plastic waste to new raw material: how the closed-loop system works

Redisol

What happens to the plastic waste left over from the production process? At the PA Group, we work with our customers to find new uses for these materials. Through a ‘closed-loop’ system, plastic waste is collected, processed and reused as raw material. Redisol plays a key role in this.

What does a closed-loop system involve?

In a closed-loop system, plastic offcuts are returned to the production chain so that they can serve as raw materials once again. Instead of disposing of valuable material, we explore how it can be reused in the production of plastic products. This process requires close cooperation between manufacturers and processors. After all, the composition and quality of the material determine the possibilities for reuse.

From waste material to new raw material

The process begins with the plastic residues generated during production. These are collected and assessed at Redisol for their properties and potential for reuse. The materials are then sorted. A pure material stream is essential to maintain the quality of the new raw material as much as possible. After sorting, the suitable residues are reprocessed into high-quality regranulate.

This regranulate can then be used in the production of new plastic semi-finished products, such as engineering films and sheets. During production, further offcuts may arise, which are reintroduced into the cycle wherever possible. This creates a closed-loop system.

What are the benefits of a closed-loop system?

By reusing plastic residues, valuable raw materials remain available for longer and the amount of material lost is minimised. At the same time, the need for new raw materials is reduced. For our customers, this approach offers greater insight into the possibilities for reusing their own waste streams. Material quality remains a key consideration in this regard. After all, not every plastic stream is suitable for the same application.

Circularity within the PA Group

Within the PA Group, we combine various areas of expertise across the plastics supply chain. Redisol focuses on the recovery and reprocessing of plastic waste. At Plastirol and Hagedorn Plastirol, residual materials are reused wherever possible in the production of plastic sheets and films. By combining this expertise and these capabilities, we are working towards a more efficient use of plastics, ensuring that valuable materials are retained for as long as possible.
